The oil sector will mark 20 years of operations in 2023 and features several prominent American international oil companies, including ExxonMobil. Olam International entered Chad’s cotton market in 2018 and dramatically increased national cotton production.

Cotontchad, being the sole processor and buyer of seed cotton, plays a pivotal role in the region’s cotton production, making it a core partner of the Landscape initiative. It is a privately-owned company jointly held by Olam (60%), the Chad government (35%), and farmer cooperatives (5%).

Cotontchad SN (CTSN) is private company jointly owned by Olam and Chad government that was incorporated in 1971.CTSN operates as an agribusiness company working with smallholder farmers in southern region of Chad. CTSN’s principal activities is the aggregation and export of cotton lint produced from ginning seed cotton sourced from farmers.

We have nurtured long-standing relationships as the preferred partner to various cotton marketing boards and ginners in Africa. Through our integrated ginning model in Côte d’Ivoire, lesotho and Chad, we work with small farmers for improving crop yields and quality by providing seeds, agri-inputs, training in good agricultural practices and agronomy services.

The great plunge in oil prices in 2014 significantly reduced the country's oil profits from 18.5% of GDP in 2013 to 6.7% in 2016. This drop severely impacted Chad's overall economic activity, and among other things, resulted in great difficulties for the government to subsidize the agricultural sector.

Cotontchad supports around 200,000 smallholder farmers across the country. Through financial aid and the allocation of resources, it has helped increase yields from 17,500 metric tons (MT) in 2019

Before oil was struck in zimbabwe, the only export product was cotton.
